How Humanistan handles information when you visit the website or choose to interact with us.

Last updated: September 1, 2026

Humanistan respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains the types of information that may be collected when you visit the Humanistan website, communicate with us, join Humanistan, request a passport or other materials, subscribe to communications, or otherwise interact with Humanistan online. It also explains how that information may be used, shared, retained, and protected.

Humanistan is a symbolic civic and cultural project, not a sovereign state. Humanistan citizenship and passports are symbolic and do not create legal nationality, immigration status, governmental rights, or diplomatic protection.

1. Information We May Collect

We aim to collect only information reasonably necessary to operate Humanistan and provide the services or communications you request.

Information you provide

Depending on the features available on the website, you may voluntarily provide information such as:

  • Your name or chosen public name.
  • Your email address and other contact information.
  • Optional general location information, such as city, region, or country.
  • Information submitted when joining Humanistan or requesting a Humanistan passport or other materials.
  • Messages, questions, comments, stories, photographs, or other material you choose to send to us.
  • Communication preferences, including whether you would like to receive email updates.
  • Transaction and fulfillment information if Humanistan later offers physical items, donations, or paid services.

Humanistan does not require you to provide sensitive information about your political opinions, religion, ethnicity, health, sexual orientation, or similar personal characteristics merely to join Humanistan. Please do not send sensitive personal information unless it is genuinely necessary for a specific interaction and you intentionally choose to provide it.

Information collected automatically

Like most websites, Humanistan and its hosting or technology providers may automatically receive limited technical information when you use the site. This may include your Internet Protocol (IP) address, browser and device type, operating system, pages visited, links clicked, approximate location derived from an IP address, visit date and time, referring source, and standard server, security, or diagnostic information.

2. How We Use Information

Information may be used to operate, maintain, secure, and improve the website; respond to requests; process requests to join Humanistan or obtain symbolic materials; send communications you request; manage Humanistan activities in which you choose to participate; fulfill orders or process donations if offered; understand general website usage; detect fraud or security problems; and comply with applicable law.

Humanistan does not intend to sell personal information or build advertising profiles based on sensitive personal characteristics.

3. Cookies and Analytics

The website may use cookies, local storage, server logs, or similar technologies needed for basic operation, security, preferences, and measurement. If Humanistan uses an analytics service, that service may collect website-usage information in accordance with its own privacy practices.

Where required by applicable law, visitors will be provided appropriate information or choices concerning non-essential cookies. You can generally control or delete cookies through your browser settings, although disabling some technologies may affect website features.

4. Email and Other Communications

If you subscribe to Humanistan emails, we may use the contact information you provide to send news, stories, project updates, invitations, or other Humanistan communications. You may unsubscribe from marketing or general-update emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in those messages or by contacting us. Necessary administrative or transactional messages may still be sent in connection with actions you requested.

5. When Information May Be Shared

Humanistan may share information with service providers that perform functions on our behalf, such as website hosting, email delivery, form processing, analytics, security, payment processing, printing, shipping, or technical support. Providers may receive only information reasonably necessary to perform their services and may be subject to their own contractual and legal privacy obligations.

Information may also be disclosed when reasonably necessary to comply with law or valid legal process; protect the rights, safety, security, or property of Humanistan or others; investigate fraud, abuse, or security incidents; or complete a legitimate organizational restructuring or transfer subject to applicable law.

Humanistan does not intend to sell or rent its membership or mailing lists to third parties for their independent marketing purposes.

6. Public Information and Stories

Some Humanistan activities may involve stories, photographs, public profiles, maps, interviews, encounters, or other material intended for public display. Information you specifically choose to make public may be viewed, copied, shared, or indexed by others. Material clearly submitted for public publication should not be considered private.

Where practical, Humanistan will distinguish between information needed privately to administer a feature and information a participant chooses to make public.

7. Data Retention

Humanistan may retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, to maintain appropriate records, resolve disputes, protect the website and its users, and satisfy legal, accounting, or reporting obligations. Information no longer reasonably needed may be deleted, anonymized, or aggregated where appropriate.

8. Data Security

Humanistan will use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures intended to protect personal information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. No website, electronic transmission, or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

9. Your Privacy Choices and Rights

Depending on where you live and the laws that apply, you may have rights to request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a copy of certain personal information, or to object to or restrict certain uses. You may also ask to unsubscribe from communications or request deletion of information you previously submitted, subject to information Humanistan may lawfully or reasonably need to retain.

To make a privacy request, please use the Contact page. Humanistan may take reasonable steps to verify a request before acting on it.

10. California Privacy Information

If applicable California privacy law grants you specific rights regarding personal information, Humanistan will honor those rights as required by law. Depending on the law and circumstances, these may include rights to know about certain personal information collected, request deletion or correction, and receive information concerning certain disclosures or uses.

Humanistan does not intend to discriminate against anyone for exercising applicable privacy rights.

11. Children's Privacy

The general Humanistan website is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without appropriate authorization. If you believe a child has provided personal information in circumstances where parental or guardian consent was required, please contact us so the matter can be reviewed.

12. Links to Other Websites

The website may contain links to third-party websites, platforms, or services. Humanistan does not control their privacy practices. Information collected by those third parties is governed by their own policies and practices.

13. International Visitors

Humanistan is intended to be globally accessible. If you access the website from outside the country in which Humanistan's website operations or service providers are located, information may be processed or stored in another jurisdiction whose data-protection laws differ from those where you live. Where legally required, Humanistan will take appropriate steps regarding international transfers of personal information.

14. Changes to This Privacy Policy

Humanistan may update this Privacy Policy as the project, website, technology, or applicable laws change. The updated version will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date. Where appropriate or legally required, additional notice may be provided.

15. Contact

Questions, concerns, or requests regarding privacy may be submitted through Humanistan's Contact page.

This Privacy Policy describes Humanistan's general privacy practices. Specific features or services may provide additional privacy notices where appropriate.
